Computer keratometry

Computer keratometr

(This test is part of the initial diagnostic evaluation.)

Keratometry is a method used to measure the curvature of the front surface of the cornea with a device called a keratometer.

The cornea is a transparent “window” of the eye that helps focus and bend (refract) the light entering the eye. Its shape is not perfectly round like a ball, but more like an ellipsoid (slightly oval). Only the very center of the cornea can be considered close to spherical.

The keratometer was first developed in 1880. The device gives two main values of corneal curvature (the steepest and the flattest meridians). Modern keratometers use optical sensors and computer systems to calculate the results.

Keratometry is done for patients with astigmatism and with changes in the shape or curvature of the cornea. Based on the results, the doctor decides on the treatment plan and how best to correct astigmatism. Keratometry results are also very important when planning cataract surgery, laser correction of myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism, and for other corneal problems.

The test does not require any special preparation. The procedure is quick and painless.
